Your Golf Game Has Four Handicaps

What if everything you believed about your golf game was wrong?

Last week we asked Inside the Scoring Zone readers a simple question:

Has the traditional 3-wood really earned its place in your golf bag?

The responses were fascinating.

  • 29% carry another combination of fairway woods, hybrids or driving clubs.
  • 24% carry a Driver, 3-Wood and 5-Wood.
  • 21% carry only a Driver and 5-Wood.
  • 17% continue to rely on the traditional Driver and 3-Wood.
  • 9% carry only a Driver and Hyrbrids

What struck us wasn't that one setup was "correct." Instead, it reinforced that golfers are becoming much more willing to build their bags around their own games rather than tradition.

That discussion prompted an email from one of our readers, Brian.

Brian is an Edison Golf customer, a longtime Inside the Scoring Zone reader and an avid Arccos user from Virginia. After reading last week's article, he reached out with a simple request:

"Would you take a look at my Arccos data and tell me what it says about my game?"

We happily accepted.

Brian shared the last 50 rounds from his Arccos account and gave us permission to analyze his data. Rather than simply answering his question privately, we realized his story contained lessons that could help thousands of amateur golfers and Brian agreed with our vision for this story.

This is the beginning of The Amateur Golfer Project. Over the coming year, we'll periodically revisit Brian's data—not on a schedule, but when enough rounds have been played to reveal meaningful trends. Our goal isn't to document every round. It's to understand how data can help one amateur golfer make smarter decisions about practice, equipment and course management—and to share those lessons with you.


Every golfer has four handicaps.

Most golfers know only one number.

Their Handicap Index.

That number tells you how you score, but it doesn't explain why you score that way.

Modern strokes gained analysis breaks your game into four separate categories:

  • Driving
  • Approach Play
  • Short Game
  • Putting

Each part of your game performs independently, and together they determine your scores.

The challenge is that our memories are often unreliable. We remember spectacular failures—a drive into the trees, a chunked bunker shot or a three-putt on the final green—but we rarely remember the dozens of ordinary shots that quietly cost us strokes over an entire season.

Brian believed he already knew where he needed to improve.

The data told a different story.

Brian assumed his short game was costing him strokes. Instead, his approach play was costing him nearly two strokes every round.


Brian's first report immediately changed the conversation.

Compared to golfers of similar ability, his putting wasn't hurting him at all. In fact, it was the strongest part of his game, gaining more than two strokes per round. His driving was also slightly better than average, while his short game was performing almost exactly where it should.

The surprise was his approach play.

Compared to an 8-handicap golfer, Brian was losing 1.9 strokes per round with his approach shots.

Without this report, he likely would have continued spending much of his practice time on putting and greenside shots simply because those mistakes were the ones he remembered most vividly.

Instead, the data pointed somewhere completely different.


Knowing the weakness isn't enough.

You also need to know where it lives.

One of the greatest strengths of strokes gained analysis is that it doesn't stop with broad categories. It drills down into the specific shots that are helping—or hurting—your game.

Brian's biggest opportunities weren't random. Every one pointed toward his approach game.


Brian's three biggest opportunities formed a remarkably clear pattern.

His largest weakness was approach shots from the fairway. Close behind were approach shots from 100-150 yards, followed by approach shots played from the rough.

Notice what's missing.

Putting.

Chipping.

Bunker play.

The parts of Brian's game he believed were holding him back weren't actually responsible for most of his lost strokes. Instead, routine approach shots—the kind that occur several times every round—were quietly adding shots to his scorecard.

That's a powerful insight because it transforms practice from guesswork into a plan.


The fairway was the biggest surprise.

If you asked 100 golfers where they'd rather hit their next approach shot from, almost every one of them would answer the same way.

The fairway.

Brian certainly would have.

His data suggested otherwise.

Good drives don't automatically produce good scores. Brian's biggest scoring leak began from the fairway.


Compared to golfers with similar handicaps, Brian loses more than one stroke per round on approach shots played from the fairway.

At first glance, that seems backwards.

But fairway lies create expectations. Golfers expect to hit these greens, and when they don't, those missed opportunities become surprisingly costly.

This doesn't necessarily mean Brian is a poor iron player. It may reflect inconsistent distance control, conservative targets, or simply too many approach shots finishing outside realistic birdie range.

Without objective data, he never would have known.


One yardage explained almost everything.

Once we knew where Brian was losing strokes, the next question became obvious.

From what distance?

The answer was unmistakable.

Approach shots between 100 and 150 yards cost Brian nearly three-quarters of a stroke every round.

That's fascinating because these are scoring clubs for most golfers. They're the distances where we expect to create birdie opportunities—not simply survive.

Many amateurs spend far more time practicing drivers than mid-irons, even though they face 100-150 yard approach shots much more frequently during a typical round.

Brian's report suggested that if he could improve just one area of his game, this would likely produce the greatest return.


Great players protect their strengths.

Data shouldn't only identify weaknesses.

It should also confirm what's already working.

Improvement isn't just about fixing weaknesses. It's about preserving the parts of your game that already separate you from the field.


Brian's report highlighted three strengths worth protecting.

His putting inside ten feet.

His putting from 10-25 feet.

His driving accuracy.

Those strengths help explain why Brian continues to score well despite giving away strokes with his approach play.

Improvement isn't about rebuilding your entire game.

It's about strengthening your weakest link while protecting your competitive advantages.


The data changed Brian's practice plan.

Good practice isn't measured by how many golf balls you hit.

It's measured by whether you're practicing the right things.

The goal isn't to practice more. It's to spend more time where the data says strokes can actually be gained.


Before seeing his Arccos report, Brian's practice sessions looked much like those of many amateur golfers. He'd hit a few drivers, work on his putting, chip for a while and then finish with a handful of random irons.

Now every practice session has a purpose.

Less time on random range sessions.

Less time chasing marginal gains with the putter.

More structured work on 100-150 yard approach shots.

More fairway iron play.

More attention to approach dispersion.

The objective isn't to practice harder.

It's to practice where the greatest opportunity exists.


So...what about the 3-wood?

Last week's article asked whether the traditional 3-wood has earned its place in the modern golf bag.

Brian's data gave us an unexpected answer.

Whether he carries a 3-wood, a 5-wood or another fairway wood combination isn't where he's losing strokes.

His approach game is.

That's an important reminder.

Golfers often spend hours debating equipment decisions that may influence only a handful of shots each month. Meanwhile, Brian uncovered one part of his game that costs him nearly two strokes every round.

Equipment absolutely matters.

But understanding your game comes first.

The best equipment decisions—and the best practice plans—begin with knowing where your strokes are actually going.


Final Thoughts

Brian's story isn't unique.

In fact, it may describe many of us.

We all carry one handicap, but hidden beneath that single number are four different games. Some of those games are helping us. Others are quietly holding us back.

The fastest-improving golfers aren't always the ones who practice the most.

They're the ones who understand exactly what deserves their attention.

That's the real lesson from The Amateur Golfer Project.

Not that Brian discovered a weakness.

But that he finally discovered the right one.

And that's where better golf begins.
